The single most important step in any construction project is the “word picture.” Most of the time, when someone starts thinking about their dream home, they get out a pencil and start sketching. It’s an understandable impulse, but sketches and floor plans don’t communicate your intentions to a designer very well. The best way to order your priorities and communicate them effectively is through a word picture. A word picture is a detailed description of what you want and need in your new home. It should be well thought out and detailed to the point of describing the dimensions of rooms, the direction they should face, their arrangement in the house, and the overall feeling of the home you are hoping to create.  … read more

Workshop canceled

The Spring 2020 Monolithic Dome Builders Workshop is canceled due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19). Everyone who signed up will receive a full refund. There are persuasive arguments that we should be proactive in limiting the spread of the virus. We can either voluntarily choose to sacrifice events and travel now, or the virus will likely force painful restrictions in the future. We choose the former for the sake of our workshop attendees and our staff. Hopefully, if we all work together, we can host the Fall 2020 Workshop in September. Thank you to everyone who signed up. We also thank everyone for fighting this pandemic and pray for those suffering from it — may they receive the care they need and recover quickly. … read more

Domes are often portrayed as the building of the future when they are one of humanity’s oldest structures. There are dome dwellings constructed as far back as 19,280 BC. The concrete dome Pantheon in Rome (126 AD) is the oldest, ancient structure with an intact roof and is still in use today. The Renaissance produced many famous domes, but the real renaissance in dome construction was in the 20th century. … read more
